How to Fix Keyboard Delay: A Complete Guide

Keyboard delay (or “input lag”) is the gap between pressing a key and seeing it register on screen โ€” anywhere from a barely noticeable few milliseconds to a delay long enough that you drop characters or notice your typing rhythm feels off. Unlike a keyboard that’s completely unresponsive, delay usually points to a smaller, more specific cause. Here’s how to track it down and fix it.

Step 1: Isolate Whether It’s the Keyboard or the System

Test with a different keyboard if you have one available (or borrow one).

  • If the other keyboard has no delay: the problem is likely with your original keyboard itself, or its specific connection
  • If the delay happens with any keyboard: the issue is system-level (drivers, background load, or settings) โ€” skip to Step 3

Step 2: Check the Physical Connection

  • Wired keyboards: Try a different USB port, ideally directly on your computer rather than through a hub or dock. Damaged or loose cables are a common, easy-to-miss cause.
  • Wireless keyboards: Replace or recharge the batteries โ€” low power is a frequent cause of signal delay before batteries die completely. Move the keyboard closer to its USB receiver, and check for interference from other wireless devices (routers, other Bluetooth peripherals) nearby.
  • Bluetooth keyboards specifically: Try unpairing and re-pairing if the delay is inconsistent rather than constant โ€” inconsistent lag usually points to a weak or interrupted Bluetooth connection rather than a system setting.

Step 3: Adjust Keyboard Repeat Delay and Rate

This is a Windows setting that controls how quickly repeated keystrokes register, and misconfigured values can feel like general lag even when nothing is technically wrong.

  1. Press Windows + R, type control keyboard, and press Enter
  2. Set Repeat delay to Short
  3. Set Repeat rate to Fast
  4. Click Apply, then test in a text field

Step 4: Turn Off Filter Keys

Filter Keys is an accessibility feature that intentionally ignores brief or repeated keystrokes โ€” useful for some users, but it can feel exactly like input lag if it’s been enabled accidentally.

  • Windows: Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > turn off Filter Keys
  • Mac: System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > make sure Slow Keys is off

Step 5: Update Your Keyboard Driver

Outdated or corrupted drivers are a common cause of delay, especially after a Windows update introduces a temporary compatibility issue with your existing driver version.

  1. Right-click Start > Device Manager
  2. Expand Keyboards
  3. Right-click your keyboard > Update driver > Search automatically for drivers

If updating doesn’t help, try uninstalling the driver entirely and restarting โ€” Windows will reinstall a clean version.

Step 6: Check for Heavy Background Load

Input devices are often among the first things affected when a system is under heavy load, since keystroke processing competes with everything else for CPU time.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  2. Sort by CPU or Memory
  3. Close resource-heavy programs you’re not actively using

Step 7: Disable USB Selective Suspend

This Windows power-saving feature can put USB devices, including your keyboard, into a low-power state that introduces a noticeable delay when you start typing again.

  1. Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings
  2. Find USB settings > USB selective suspend setting
  3. Set it to Disabled

Step 8: Check Your Polling Rate (Gaming/Mechanical Keyboards)

If you’re using a keyboard with adjustable polling rate (common on gaming keyboards), a low polling rate means your keyboard checks in with your computer less frequently, which can feel like lag during fast or repeated input.

  • Check your keyboard manufacturer’s software (e.g., Razer Synapse, Logitech G Hub, Corsair iCUE) for a polling rate setting
  • Higher polling rates (500Hz-1000Hz) reduce perceived lag but can slightly increase CPU usage โ€” this trade-off is usually worth it unless you’re on very limited hardware. See Logitech’s explainer on polling rate if you want a deeper technical breakdown.

Step 9: Perform a Clean Boot to Rule Out Software Conflicts

If nothing above resolves it, a background service or startup app may be silently interfering.

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, press Enter
  2. Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then Disable all
  3. Under Startup (via Task Manager), disable all startup items
  4. Restart and test โ€” if the delay is gone, re-enable items one group at a time to find the culprit

When It’s Likely Hardware

If you’ve tested with another keyboard and the delay persists on your original one regardless of settings:

  • Worn switches (especially on older mechanical keyboards) can cause inconsistent response over time โ€” no software fix resolves physical wear
  • Damaged internal circuitry, particularly from spills or drops, causes lag that gets progressively worse
  • At that point, repair (for laptop built-in keyboards) or replacement (for external keyboards) is the realistic path forward

Dealing with keys that don’t register at all rather than just feeling delayed? Check our guide to fixing a keyboard that’s not typing for that specific issue.
